In 1955, Rosa L. Parks (1913–2005) led the Montgomery bus boycott in Alabama and was defended in court by African American attorney, Fred Gray (b.1930), after her controversial arrest for refusing to give up her seat on a bus to a white passenger. “During the Montgomery bus boycott, Gray’s leadership and legal counsel played a crucial role in the successful desegregation of Montgomery buses.”¹ Martin Luther King, III (b. 1957) later became leader of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) founded by his father, the civil rights martyr Martin Luther King, Jr.
The poster is additionally signed by the artist—“Dippel”—whose 1986 silkscreen portrait of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. forms the background to the poster’s text.
The poster comes from the library of Brooks Morris, a Pennsylvania educator and bibliophile. Morris helped organize the event and served as the master of ceremonies. A copy of the first (and only) printing of the program is included with this poster.
